“Nocturnal Animals”, directed by Tom Ford is definitely an auteur piece. This dark, ambiguous, psychological thriller, that in essence is about a classic love story. Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal), an idealistic, romantic and Susan Morrow (Amy Adams) a pragmatist. Now living in Los Angeles, she enjoys an incredibly privileged life as a successful art dealer albeit in a failing marriage with husband (Armie Hammer).

From the beginning, looking into the eyes of Susan we feel that something is broken inside her. After receiving the soon-to-be published manuscript dedicated to her from ex-husband, Edward, she starts reading the book, Nocturnal Animals and reflecting on the choices she made in her life. – “Do you ever feel like your life is turning to something you never intended it”. Here we can see how Amy Adams character is disappointed with her path and the novel brings back memories of what she once was.

Tom Ford makes an interesting dichotomy between the sophisticated, lavish life of Susan and the violence portrayed in her ex-husband’s romance. The first is filmed with icy colors and the second in warm colors. There´s also a third storyline, the flashbacks to her past relationship with the author of the novel. All of this makes a rich narrative full of layers and gives a wide range of notes for Adams and Gyllenhaal to play.

This film stays with you and has a strong message about loyalty, connection and what we sacrifice when we don´t follow our heart.
